M5 Fatal Crash – Updated 3:45pm

Update from Avon & Somerset Police at 3:45pm (Main Story underneath)

“We have finished investigation work at the scene and are now clearing the carriageway between J25 and J26.
As such, we expect the southbound carriageway will be reopened by 4pm.
There are a number of vehicles that require moving off the northbound carriageway and we will provide timescales on reopening these lanes as soon as we can.
We’d like to thank the public for their patience and understanding while we carried out our work at what was a complex scene where sadly one person died and two were seriously injured.
There is likely to be continued congestion when the carriageway reopens and so we’re urging drivers to consider their journey and alternative routes.”

The M5 continues to be closed for on going investigation work in both directions between J25 and J26, Taunton to Wellington whilst Accident investigators from Avon & Somerset Police try to piece together the facts of the fatal crash that happened this morning.

One person has died at the scene just after 6am this morning, Fri 9th Feb.

A number of vehicles were involved and both sides of the carriageway were affected.

Approximately 15 paramedic crews were deployed by South Western Ambulance Service including ambulances, rapid response vehicles and two air ambulances.

A South Western Ambulance Spokesperson said “We treated 10 patients in total with eight being taken in to hospital”.

“Six patients were taken to Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton by road ambulance and two were taken to Southmead Hospital in Bristol by air ambulance.”

Avon & Somerset Police and Highways England expect the motorway will remain closed until approximately 8pm and advise your journey be delayed where possible.

Highways England are reporting that surrounding roads are being hugely affected, with the A303 suffering badly at the moment. There are long delays near Chard on the A303 in both directions due to the closure of the M5 near Taunton (J25-J26 both ways. There are also long delays on the M5 N/B between J27 and J26 approaching the closure. Where possible drivers should consider alternative routes.
