Avon and Somerset Police are appealing for the public’s help after the M5 southbound was closed this morning.
The motorway between J25-26 near Taunton was closed for more than an hour following a road traffic collision which happened at about 7.15am.
A car which collided with a lorry was then in collision with the central reservation barrier.
Diesel was released on to the motorway because the lorry’s fuel tank was ruptured, which damaged the road surface.
All three lanes of the motorway were closed to allow emergency services to deal with the incident. Lanes two and three were later opened but lane one has remained closed to allow maintenance work to be carried out to lane one.
Avon and Somerset Police are keen to hear from anyone who was on the motorway at the time of the incident, who may have information to help their enquiries.
They would particularly like to speak to the driver of a pickup vehicle with a double cab – a Great Wall Steed. This was black with a hard cover over the pick-up section.
They know this vehicle was on the motorway at the time of the incident and would like to speak to the driver who they believe may have useful information to assist them, piecing together exactly what happened.
They would like the driver of the pickup or anyone who knows him to contact the road policing unit at the Bridgwater Policing Centre on the force number 101, quoting log 103 of today (Wednesday May 13).
