Female rescued from vehicle ’embedded in a hedge’ following incident on A303

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service received a call from Ambulance control reporting a road traffic incident on the A303 Southfields to South Petherton at 16:06 this afternoon, with reports of people trapped.

Appliances from Chard and Ilminster were immediately mobilised as well as the rescue tender from Taunton.

A Fire Service officer came across the incident whilst off duty and confimred there was one vehicle embedded in a hedge, in a precarious position, with one female driver trapped.


Police implemented a road block whilst fire crews worked on creating space to remove the casualty and worked with 1 paramedic and 1 doctor on scene.


There was significant conjestion in the area on the A303 and A358. Fire crews had stabilised the car and were working to gain access to the casualty who was still in the car. One heavy goods vehicle was confirmed to be involved in the road traffic incident.


The officer in charge confirmed one casualty was removed from the vehicle with possible neck injuries. She was released using hydraulic cutting equipment, and stabilising equipment was also used. The casualty was transported to hospital by land ambulance and the incident was handed over to the police.
