Half centuries from Marcus Trescothick and James Hildreth along with his third in as many innings’ from Tom Abell helped Somerset enjoy a successful opening day of their LV=Championship match against Hampshire where they closed on 310 for six.
Abell shared in an opening partnership of 95 with Trescothick, 50 with Johann Myburgh for the second wicket, he helped to add 60 for the third wicket with James Hildreth before he was out for 88.
Hildreth then added 72 for the fifth wicket with Trego on a day that Somerset’s batting came to the fore.
Shortly after the close Tom said:
“Yes I am very pleased to get my third good score in a row and it feels very nice indeed and it is great to have helped the team to get into a strong position which makes it even sweeter.
“I am enjoying some good form at the moment and we have got a bit of momentum going as a team which is nice.
“We have been trying to build partnerships and not lose wickets in clusters and today it has happened well for us. I was pleased to have shared in three partnerships myself, first with Tres then with Mybs and Hildy.”
Talking about the wicket Tom said:
“There is a little bit out there for the bowlers, especially with the new ball when there is variable bounce and a little bit of movement off the seam and then later on a couple of ball spun a bit so hopefully we can make use of that when we have a bowl.”
“If we can get a couple more partnerships going then we can really take advantage of the position that we have got ourselves into today.”
