Taunton is maintaining its enviable South West in Bloom record – taking home a Gold pennant in the annual competition.
Taunton in Bloom is co-ordinated by Shaun Cregan and much of the town’s success is due to the hard work and commitment from volunteers, individuals and groups like Friends of our parks, as well as Taunton Deane Borough Council’s open spaces team.
The awards were announced at a special ceremony at Dartmouth Naval College in Devon.
Bath Place won a special It’s Your Neighbourhood award with judges dubbing the historic street as “thriving.” The campaign is part of the wider Britain in Bloom initiative, providing an opportunity for smaller community groups to get involved.
The competition comes under the auspices of the Royal Horticultural Society that looks for evidence of community involvement as well as horticultural achievement in making awards.
Cllr Catherine Herbert, who holds the sports, parks and leisure portfolio, said:
“Winning gold is a terrific achievement for Taunton. We are justifiably proud of our wonderful parks, open spaces and floral displays so the award is really gratifying.
“It’s also real recognition to all the hard work that has gone into making Bath Place look even more attractive so I would like to congratulate all involved.
“We owe a huge debt of thanks to all those volunteers who give up their time and energy to help Taunton look its best. We were delighted to win Green Flag awards for our parks earlier this summer so the gold award is the icing on the cake!”
