Two fire engines tackle deliberate camper van fire in Wellington

A fire appliance from Wellington was mobilised following numerous calls from neighbours within the close reporting a car on fire at Russet Close, Wellington at 01:21 this morning (Wednesday).

Shortly after arriving a further fire appliance was requested, also from Wellington, due to the vehicle being well alight and there being a concern that it was very close to a property, whilst the crew set to work with 2BA and 1 hose reel jet.

At 01:58hrs crews confirmed the fire was extinguished and that they had discontinued the use of BA, however, they were continuing to damp down the van and monitor the nearby property for possible fire spread.

At 02:18hrs the incident was brought under control after crews confirmed all hotspots were now extinguished and there was no sign of fire spread.

The fire, which had been started deliberately, caused 75% damage and once the scene had been made safe, duty of care was left with the owners and the Police.
