Five people taken to hospital following collision in Sampford Arundel near Wellington

Three fire appliances from Wellington and Taunton were mobilised following a request from Ambulance to a two vehicle road traffic collision at Beambridge Hill, Sampford Arundel near Wellington at 18:25 yesterday (Wednesday).

Someone was reported to be trapped and unconscious in one of the vehicles.

Shortly after arriving and assessing the scene, crews confirmed there were three elderly casualties in one vehicle, one of them physically trapped, with two further casualties (walking wounded), from the other vehicle.

Crews initially set to work stabilising the vehicle, to allow the two elderly female casualties to be assisted from the vehicle, before crews were then able to extricate the elderly male driver, using hydraulic cutting equipment.

Once extricated he was air lifted to hospital, whilst the remaining four casualties were conveyed to hospital by land ambulance.

Crews then made both vehicles and scene safe before leaving duty of care with the Police.
