All lanes have reopened on the M5 between Junctions 26 and 27 following a car and caravan fire. Delays remain on approach but should now start to ease.
Three appliances, two from Taunton and one from Wellington, and the water foam carrier from Bridgwater were mobilised following numerous calls from members of the public stating a vehicle and caravan on fire on the M5 Southbound between Junctions 26 and 27 at 10:34 this morning (Sunday).
Crews confirmed one car on the hard shoulder was well alight and got to work with breathing apparatus, hose reels and a compressed air foam jet to extinguish the fire.
Police, highways and ambulance were also on the scene and ambulance crew treated a family who were suffering from slight smoke inhalation and shock.
Crews extinguished the vehicle fire using one hose reel, one compressed air foam jet and two breathing apparatus.
The caravan was detached from the vehicle by fire service and was not damaged by fire.
Ambulance crew rendered first aid to the occupants of the vehicle.
