Chairman of the Council, Councillor Nigel Taylor, visited Taunton’s Royal Mail sorting office today to see the county’s postal system gearing up for its biggest week of the year.
The Chip Lane office handles post for the TA and Yeovil postcodes and expects to process more than 300,000 items each day this week.
There were around 130-staff working flat-out when Cllr Taylor visited to see first-hand the operation of delivering Christmas post – and to pass on early Season’s Greetings to its dedicated, hardworking staff.
Deliver Office Manager, Natalie Dipper, who has worked for Royal Mail for more than 20 years, gave Cllr Taylor a tour of the office to see staff pulling out the stops to sort and deliver everything from the standard Christmas cards to fresh flowers and Scottish salmon.
The Festive Season is Royal Mail’s busiest period, as millions of people shop online for gifts as well as sending Christmas cards and parcels.
“We all know that this is a busy time for the postal service, but I’ve never seen behind the scenes before and it is a remarkable operation,” said Cllr Taylor.
“Online shopping has changed things massively in recent years and a huge amount of effort goes in to making sure everything gets delivered as planned.
“On behalf of the County Council I would like to express our thanks to the Royal Mail personnel for the above and beyond service they give to their communities all year round, not just at this time of year.”
Today (18 Dec) is the last recommended posting date for Second-Class mail. For First Class it is Thursday (20 Dec) and for Special Delivery Saturday (22 Dec).
Natalie said: “Our postmen and women will be working extremely hard to deliver Christmas parcels, cards, letters and parcels to people in Somerset. No-one will leave this office on Christmas Eve until we’ve cleared all the post.
“We’d like to remind our customers to post early this Christmas and to ensure all their mail is posted by the recommended dates, so that friends and family can enjoy their Christmas greetings and parcels. If everyone uses the postcode on every item of mail, this also helps us greatly in the job that we do at this very busy time.”
Customers can help Royal Mail ensure that all their letters, cards and parcels are delivered as quickly and efficiently as possible by taking a few easy steps:
· Post early – Avoid disappointment by posting your cards and parcels early.
· Use the postcode – A clearly addressed card or parcel, with a postcode, and return address on the back of the envelope, will ensure quick and efficient delivery.
· Use Special Delivery – For valuable and important packages and parcels guarantee delivery with Royal Mail’s Special Delivery, which means your gift is tracked, traced and insured against loss.
· Wrap parcels well and always give a return address
