Cricket World Cup Flag Teams

The ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019 is coming to Taunton this year with men’s teams from around the globe competing at the County Ground.

Taunton will be hosting three matches including a day/night game between Afghanistan and New Zealand on 8 June, the Pakistan v Australia match on 12 June and Bangladesh v West Indies on 17 June.

The matches are already sold out but young adults aged between 16 and 23 are being offered a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to play the key role of Flag Team member.

The Flag Teams will get the thrill of walking out ahead of the teams, carrying the competing nations’ flags and then taking to the field during the mid-innings break to coach mini cricket games in front of thousands of spectators.

Taunton Deane Borough Council helped to pave the way for international matches in the county town with a £1m commercial loan to the club making it possible for Somerset to upgrade and expand its ground to meet the exacting standards of world cricket.

The Council is also working with the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019 to promote the matches and the town.

Cllr Mark Edwards, Executive Councillor for Business Development, Asset Management and Communications, said: “The World Cup matches are a real coup for Taunton and will be a big draw for fans. A lot of people have already signed up as volunteers and will be playing a key part in the match days. This chance to be part of the Flag Teams is another wonderful opportunity for any young person who wants to get involved in this exciting sporting event in our home town.”

Flag Team members will be provided with volunteer training and a coaching activator certificate.
