‘Eleven casualties’ following multiple vehicle collision on A303

Three fire engines and a rescue tender from Martock, Ilminster and Yeovil along with a supporting officer were initially mobilised to a report of a multiple vehicle road traffic collision on the A303 Southfields to South Petherton at 15:25 this afternoon (Sunday).

On arrival, crews confirmed three persons were trapped in three different cars and crews got to work setting up equipment to release the casualties and to secure scene safety.

Oxygen therapy was being given to one of the casualties.

Crews requested a further fire engine which also attended from Yeovil.

The fire service confirmed this was a four vehicle road traffic collision with a total of eleven casualties of which four were trapped.

Crews released by roof removal and using hydraulic cutting equipment and stabilising gear.

Two casualties were air lifted to hospital, two were conveyed by road ambulance and the walking wounded were checked over by ambulance on scene.

Crews got to work making up equipment.

The A303 has reopened in both directions between Southfields Roundabout and South Petherton Roundabout.


The A303 South Petherton Roundabout to Southfields Roundabout is closed in both directions.

Avon and Somerset Police have advised that the road will be closed until at least 21:00 before it is handed back to highways. This is not the time that the road will reopen.

Diversions remain in place.
