Next phase of Junction 25 works

A multi-million pound scheme to improve the busy M5 Junction 25 in Taunton will enter a new phase later this month with the start of works to widen the Toneway.

Somerset County Council is currently upgrading Junction 25 to improve traffic flow, ease peak hour congestion and unlock land for employment to the east of the M5.

The scheme started earlier this year and so far, has made good progress with widening of the J25 roundabout, clearance of the old farm and access at the park and ride site all taking place at night or offline to minimise disruption.

The next step is for contractor Alun Griffiths to widen the Toneway on the approach to Junction 25 starting on Saturday 27 July.

This phase will require lane closures, narrow lanes and a reduced speed limit to keep the workforce and road users safe while work is underway.

The Toneway will be closed for four nights between 8pm and 6am while traffic management is set up. Once in place, two lanes will be kept open for traffic heading into town from Junction 25 but only one lane will be open for traffic heading out of town towards Junction 25.

Councillor John Woodman, Somerset County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways, said: “This upgrade of Junction 25 is vital for Taunton and Somerset so we’re very pleased to see it progressing well, particularly with so much achieved already with minimal impact on the public.

“We now need to start widening the Toneway – a significant piece of engineering which cannot be done offline. We’re doing our best to keep traffic moving as much as possible but please do bear with us during this phase and plan your journey carefully.”

This arrangement on the Toneway is expected to remain in place until summer 2020 when works will switch elsewhere. Sign up for newsletters to stay up to date with progress and any changes.
