Panel seeks volunteers for crucial role

A crucial role has become available to help Somerset County Council decide how much allowance to pay its councillors.

The Joint Independent Remuneration Panel is looking for two new volunteers. Although a voluntary role, panel members receive a travel allowance for attending meetings and a small annual payment.

Members of the Panel should be able to attend early evening meetings at County Hall four to six times a year and read reports prior to each meeting. Initially, members will need to commit to a three-year period, with the option to extend this for a further three years.

A Somerset County Council spokesperson said: “If you’re interested in local Government and the way councils work, this is a fascinating and rewarding role. We would particularly like to hear from female applicants to address an imbalance in the panels membership.”

Councils are required by the Government to establish Independent Remuneration Panels. A report from the panel must be considered before altering councillors’ allowances. Panel members combine information from councils and interviews with councillors when writing the report.

To apply for the position, send a copy of your CV and a short supporting statement stating why you think you are qualified for the role.
