The mobile fish shed lands at Rumwell Farm Shop

FOODLOVERS who enjoy eating fresh fish can net themselves the catch of the day from this month (June 2021) onwards at an award-winning Somerset farm shop.

Rumwell Farm Shop has a fishmonger on-site from June 11 and the launch of the new venture coincides with British Nutrition Foundation’s (BNF) Healthy Eating Week running until June 18.

Anne Mitchell, Joint Owner of the Farm Shop, which is located on the A38 between Taunton and Wellington, says: “Simon Baker from Lyme Bay Seafood in Lyme Bay will be setting up his mobile fish shed at our Farm Shop from Friday, June 11 and will be trading here every Friday and Saturday during normal opening hours each week.

“It’s apt that the start of Simon’s residency with us coincides with Healthy Eating Week as the NHS says a healthy, balanced diet should include at least two portions of fish a week, including one of oily fish. That’s because fish and shellfish are good sources of many vitamins and minerals. Oily fish – such as salmon and sardines – is also particularly high in long-chain omega-three fatty acids, which can help to keep your heart healthy.”

Simon’s business is a brand-new venture created from his lifelong passion for all things fish related and he will be selling fresh fish, shellfish and smoked products. He plans to buy direct from fisheries in the Lyme Bay area, as well as the famous Brixham market and other seasonal, sustainable suppliers.

Simon explains: “I completed my Master Fishmonger Standard certificate earlier this year and as well as selling fish, I am also able to offer all kinds of fish preparation for customers from fillets to steaks.

“Customers will be able to make orders with me during the week that can be collected from the Farm Shop on either Friday 9am until 5.30pm or Saturday 8.30 until 5pm.”

If you are interested in placing an order, please call 07594 485135 or email .

BNF is hoping to take everyone on a ‘find your healthier you’ journey during its Healthy Eating Week. The event is all about people reflecting on their lifestyles and looking to make improvements to enhance their health and wellbeing.

Anne adds: “We’re passionate about the provenance of the items we stock and about supporting local, regional and British producers and suppliers wherever we can. We’re keen to keep food miles down and, also, to support healthy eating by sourcing the items we sell as close to our Farm Shop as possible. Sustainability is very important to us and this goes hand in hand with having the best, fresh, quality produce.”

Rumwell Farm Shop is an independent, family-run, award-winning business owned by the Mitchell family. Originally a potato store, David and Anne Mitchell began selling their potatoes and free-range eggs at the gate more than 23 years ago.

Due to customer demand, the product range soon increased, and the business grew. David and Anne’s sons, James and Jack, are now also involved, as well as their daughters-in-law, Sophie and Donna.

Rumwell Farm Shop has a traditional butchery counter selling its home-reared and free-range pork and Rumwell Angus beef. There is also a delicatessen, bakery, jam kitchen, food hall, wine cellar and gift room.

Its own, home-grown potatoes are available, when in season, as well as everything from fruit, vegetables and groceries to plants, Somerset-grown cut flowers, gifts and cards.

The Rumwell Café is a large and spacious building. The food prepared in the café kitchen is sourced from the farm shop, the Mitchell family farm, which is just four miles away, and other regional suppliers.

Families are welcome to the café and there is a menu especially for children. The café also serves afternoon teas, roast lunches daily and is licensed to sell alcoholic beverages.

The Rumwell Flower Shed has also recently opened onsite in partnership with Somerset Grower Florist, Aizel Finch from Yalham Hayes Farm. It will be stocked with as many Somerset grown and sourced cut flowers as possible, as well as houseplants and stylish accessories.
