Remembrance services and parades will soon be taking place across the county to mark Remembrance Day on Thursday 11 November, and Remembrance Sunday on 14 November.
This year also marks the centenary of the Royal British Legion, and with services unable to take place last year due to coronavirus restrictions, Public Health Leaders across Somerset are asking the public to take some simple steps to ensure they do not spread Covid-19 during the events.
Professor Trudi Grant, Director of Public Health for Somerset County Council, said: “Remembrance Day is an important day to remember the service and sacrifice of those who have defended our freedoms. We know there will be many people across the County who are keen to attend services, but it is important to remember that coronavirus is very much still with us.
“All participants should take a lateral flow Covid-19 test before attending services, and all attendees are advised to socially distance if possible and wear a face covering, in line with the latest Government guidance, if in a crowded area. It is important to remember not to go out and about or visit others if you exhibit any symptoms or feel unwell. Instead, please self-isolate immediately and get a PCR test.”
Cllr Rod Williams, Chairman of the Somerset Armed Forces Covenant Partnership, said, “We remember the service and sacrifice of the Armed Forces community from Britain and the Commonwealth, not just in the two World Wars of the 20th Century but in all wars and conflicts.”
“However, it is important for us to follow advice from Public Health while we mark Remembrance Day and Remembrance Sunday so that we play our part in stopping coronavirus spreading.”
Somerset residents are also being reminded to step forward for their first, second or booster jab, when invited. The vaccination remains the best form of defence against the virus, and anyone in Somerset who is feeling unsure about whether to have their Covid-19 vaccine is being encouraged to set up a call with a Vaccination Buddy.
Vaccination Buddies are specially trained volunteers who are on hand to have supportive phone calls with people who have questions or concerns about getting the Covid-19 vaccine.
