Up for the Cup!

Taunton go in search of their first silverware for eight years when they play Frome Town in the final of the Somerset Premier Cup at Paulton Rovers FC this evening (29 April), kick-off 7.45pm. It was on the 25th April 2006 that Town last tasted cup glory when they pulled off a shock to beat then Southern Premier Mangotsfield United 3-2 in the final of the same competition at Weston-super-Mare. This evenings opponents Frome also reside one division above the Peacocks in the Premier, having just finished in 14th place, and include former Town favourite Jon Vance in their ranks so are bound to pose a difficult challenge.

Manager Leigh Robinson said:” It’s great to finish the season competing in a cup final and naturally we are all really looking forward to it. With Frome being a league above us we will go into the game as underdogs but it’s cup football and all about who takes their opportunities on the night. We won our last few league matches without really being at our best but everyone knows that we’ll need to be at our maximum tomorrow to win.”

Ross MacNab misses the game as he is cup-tied, otherwise the Peacocks are at full strength. Town have yet to concede a goal in the competition this season, beginning their run with a 9-0 rout of Welton Rovers in October. This was followed by a 1-0 win over Bridgwater Town a month later at the Viridor Stadium before a trip to Wells City in the quarter-final saw Town emerge 2-0 victors. Taunton then travelled to Conference South side Bath City in the semi-finals and caused another upset with a 1-0 success. All Peacock fans will be hoping one last push this evening will round the season off with a flourish.
