Somerset County Council has launched an urgent appeal calling on residents and job seekers to fill social care vacancies in the midst of a national staffing crisis.
The campaign, which launched on Monday 4th October has been supported by Glastonbury Festival founder Michael Eavis, who praised Somerset’s dedicated care workforce, describing them as “absolutely brilliant people”.
The urgent appeal is asking for Somerset residents and communities to step in and fill social care vacancies – either in the short-term or longer-term – as these unprecedented times are putting severe pressure on the local health and social care system.
Vulnerable people in Somerset deserve to receive the care they need to support them to live happy, healthy and independent lives – this could be at home or with a care provider. Currently there aren’t enough staff in Somerset to meet this need.
As part of the campaign, a new website has been launched to support care providers with free advertising for job vacancies – providers with vacancies can now submit these online by filling in a short form: Proud to Care – submit a new job role – Somerset County Council
Vacant roles can be found at www.proudtocaresomerset.org.uk/jobs and range from helping people in their own homes, caring for younger people with a learning disability, to helping people in residential care.
Somerset County Council Leader David Fothergill said: “Working in care can be hugely rewarding and the sector is full of unsung heroes going above and beyond to make a real difference to people’s lives every single day. This year we are seeing increased vacancies due to a combination of factors and we are working closely with providers to ensure everyone gets the support they need. Michael Eavis, Founder of Glastonbury Festival said: “Carers are absolutely brilliant people. My mum was in a home for ten years – she died aged 99, and they looked after her so well. They loved her – absolutely brilliant people. They are the salt of the earth, actually, they really are, so let’s look after them.
“To the carers, I want to say thank you so much for doing so much and doing such a wonderful job. We all love you to bits.”
Mel Lock, Somerset County Council’s Director of Adult Social Care said: “Caring for disabled young people and adults has taught me so much about social care, and inspired my career choices. Though I started my career a long time ago, it continues to be rewarding and challenging in equal parts. Every day brings something new, but always brings a smile to my face.
