May Half Term – Step in to the boots of a Second World War pilot at Fleet Air Arm Museum

This May half-term the Fleet Air Arm Museum is bringing the stories of fighter pilots to life with engaging storytelling and hands-on activities sure to interest the whole family. Visitors will get the chance to learn all about the Corsair aircraft of the Second World War and go behind the scenes of the lives of their pilots.

Dressed in full pilot uniform Martin, from Martin’s Heritage World, will bring history to life, exploring what it was like to fly these planes for the Royal Navy’s Fleet Air Arm. A performance for all ages, this event will immerse visitors with captivating storytelling and hands-on interactions. Visitors will experience what it was truly like to fly into history during one of the world’s most pivotal moments.

Between shows there will also be the chance to get hands on with the equipment used by these pilots, and dive deeper into the life and legacy of these aviators. Following the event visitors are encouraged to explore Hall 2, where a genuine example of a Corsair is on display. Designation KD431, this plane is believed to be the most original example of a Corsair in the world. Following a pioneering conservation project this plane was returned to its 1944 condition, including paintwork, markings, and even wear and tear.

The Chance-Vought Corsair was involved in some of the Fleet Air Arm’s most impressive operations, including giving air support for the operation that sunk the legendary German battleship Tirpitz, sister ship of the Bismarck.

Elliott Bailey, Public Programming Manager at the Fleet Air Arm Museum said “We’re incredibly excited to bring the Corsair and its brave pilots to life in a whole new way, whether you’re a history buff or hearing about them for the first time. It’s putting people at the centre of the story of the Second World War.”

This event is free with a valid museum ticket, which offers year-round access to the museum’s seasonal events.
