Taunton Town Council has officially been awarded Council of Sanctuary (CoS) status. This recognition highlights Taunton’s commitment to creating a welcoming and inclusive community for all, particularly for those seeking sanctuary from conflict, persecution, or fear of personal safety.
The City of Sanctuary scheme is a national initiative, encouraging communities to foster a culture of hospitality and support for refugees and asylum seekers. By aligning with the principles of the City of Sanctuary, Taunton Town Council aims to ensure that everyone feels safe, valued, and included.
Councillor Nick O’Donnell, Member Champion for Sanctuary, expressed his pride in this achievement: “Migration has always been an important part of Taunton’s history. At the latest census, 13.8% of people within the Town Council area were born outside of the UK. This award reaffirms our dedication to building a compassionate and inclusive community. As a town and a community, we can make a significant difference to the lives of those seeking sanctuary amongst us; by welcoming those seeking safety and supporting them to rebuild their lives, secure in the knowledge that they can do in peace. We will now be implementing our Strategy and Action plan to achieve our Sanctuary priorities and aims.”
Maggie Filipova-Rivers CoS Programme Manager said “Congratulations to Taunton Town Council on being recognised as a Town Council of Sanctuary. This award is a testament to your unwavering commitment to building a compassionate and inclusive community where everyone, regardless of background, can find safety, support, and a true sense of belonging. Your collaborative efforts with local community groups to welcome and support those seeking sanctuary are a powerful example of how kindness, unity, and partnership can create lasting change. Thank you for your inspiring leadership in making Taunton a place where hope and humanity truly flourish”
