Tea, cake, and death? Do something unusual and shatter the stigma around talking about death.

Death Cafe Taunton is back! On Friday, 25 November from 10:30 – 12:30, join Death Cafe Taunton for our first face-to-face session since 2020, at the Glass Box at Taunton Library.

Death Cafe Taunton is an opportunity for individuals to come together and discuss all aspects of death, in a relaxed and respectful setting. Adults of any age and experience are invited to attend, to enjoy refreshments and talk about death, dying, and beyond. There is no set agenda, and it is not bereavement support. Cake and hot drinks will be provided for an optional donation.

Nicole Durman, an NHS nurse living in Wellington, has been facilitating Death Cafe Taunton in-person and online since 2017. She is excited to be able to return to in-person cafes since moving the discussion online during the Covid pandemic. “When it comes to talking about death and the myriad of issues and emotions surrounding the topic, it is so much better to be able to speak to others in the same room. I’m looking forward to seeing familiar faces as well as new attendees — if you’re curious, come and see what we’re about! Chatting about death isn’t morbid, but can help us live our best lives when we can talk about our fears, hopes, and future plans.”

Wallace Stuart Funeral Directors of Bridgwater will be in attendance, facilitating discussion and being on hand for advice or to answer questions. Cathy Chiplen, a death doula and soul midwife, will also be supporting the event, as well as a professionals from Marie Curie and Somerset End of Life Care and Bereavement Support Group.

Death Cafe is a global movement, with the aim of increasing awareness of death and to help people make the most of their lives. It was started by Jon Underwood in the UK in 2011. It exists today as a not-for-profit social franchise, with death cafes popping up all the time, all over the world.
