Irish Header Just the Tonic

Two days after arguably their worst result of the season, Town bounced back with one of their best as they beat second-placed Cirencester Town 1-0 in the Calor League at the Viridor Stadium yesterday evening (27 March). Owen Irish was the Peacocks’ match winner with a stoppage time goal as Town deservedly came out on top against a side with the best away record in the division. There were few chances throughout the game but those that came along were predominantly enjoyed by the home side who came closest to scoring in the first half when Jamie Short darted forward and played the ball through to Ben Carter who rounded Glyn Garner in the Centurions’ goal but hit the post from a narrow angle. Steve Murray’s shot from 25 yards whistled past the upright before half time but the visitors perked up a bit after the interval, with Joe Shephard volleying past the far post. Ross MacNab fired over the bar from a Short corner and Carter’s persistent run led to a shot which Garner managed to push out before Town grabbed the goal that mattered one minute into added time. Murray won a corner on the left and from Short’s flag kick, Irish launched himself for a near post header which flew over Garner into the far corner for a brave and important winner. Manager Leigh Robinson said:  “Once again, a really great reaction after a disaster on Tuesday. The players were clearly hurting after Tuesday and all credit to them for coming out and performing like that against one of the league’s better sides. We very rarely fail to react to bad results but it would be nice if we had to do it less often by adding some consistency but we know that on our day we’ll beat anyone in this league.”
